  • Tuna mod dial choices

No I'm not going to butcher a beautiful Seiko Tuna
I picked up a sterile Tuna wannabe of the Fleabay which I will do a write up on later .
The problem I have is choosing a dial for it .
I have narrowed down the choices but now I need help and second / third opinions to help me progress .
So pop your 2 cents in .
If I go with 1 hands can be recycled
If I go 2,3 or 4 new hands wil be needed
Was considering a yellow Sumo mod dial but sumo dial don't seem right in a tuna case

If it wasn't supposed to be a fun piece maybe #1 would be the go but #4 Seiko Boys DOXA homage will be :uuberjump: cool in that 'skippy'.

'without any question', laying down the law pretty firmly there

lego block seconds hand is real pretty

dwarf hour hand is cool (who needs the hours underwater anyway) :uuberjump:

plongeur minutes hand, most useful hand for the diver is super massive

By the way, want to mention that the OP's post is incredibly well structured & implemented

I really like dial option 4 as well. The yellow minutes hand will give it a really unique look.
            How's this project going Pedro?

This mod came with a few pitfalls which I should have foreseen but I completely missed .
Will do a post on the watch before the mod and after the mod ( Watch quality and problems with modding this particular watch )

Pitfalls or not, that dial is extremely pleasing to the eye!
              Looking forward to your write-up.

following on from Pedros decisions and my cock up on the tst I have gone for the below options while I hunt down an original 7548 dial and hand set

FFF vintage dial with gold framed lume pots...

and finished off with a gold numbered ceramic bezel insert...

I think the black out shroud will work well with the black bezel and gold highlights.
feel free to mock my choices and feel even free'er to send me your NOS hands and dial set for a 7548

As we know these tuna clones come in various guises.
There are various brands such as sharkey ect available on eBay, some privately designed by overseas watch groups.
The sterile versions direct from the manufacturer are available on eBay
And for a little less dosh you can get direct from the same manufacturer on Aliexpress
So first let’s look at the quality of my sterile factory model.
At first appearance it looked great,
Sapphire crystal, great bezel action, solid build and Seiko's movement sweeping away nicely.
After a couple of days on the wrist the movement was keeping good time as per Seiko's specs but
                  Minor issues were becoming apparent.
The strap had that cheap sticky feeling you get from silicone and the spring bars were definitely sub standard as I quickly found out watching it tumble from my wrist.
The case was well finished but on mine, but they didn’t debur the edges around the strap fitting slot area and feels sharp. This could be just my watch and not necessarily all watches from manufacturer will come like this but it raises the Q.C issue standards
The minute hand came loose and swirled freely (but I’ll give them the benefit of doubt as it could have been the drop that loosened it.)
New pins, strap, and refit the hands .. and we good to go.
                  Will debur at later date
Water resistant, well I wouldn’t chance it submerged but rain doesn’t fog it up.
I have tried the watch club versions and had the opportunity to handle the branded versions.
Both of which are better than my factory version.
But they would've demanded higher Q.C standards and probably paid slightly more to get better quality.

So on to the main reason I brought it.. Modding.
Monster's have become too expensive to play around with and this looked the cheaper option.
A standard NH35 movement, dials and hands readily available from Noah and Yobokies.
                  What can go wrong?
Well the Tuna wannabe may look the part but they are not done to exact Seiko specs.

The Main problem is in the position of the crown which is slightly out by a few millimetres.
                  Causing alignment problems
Their dials are made to suit their positioning of fitted movement.
So when the Mod dial is fitted all is out of alignment
The hands and dials fit great but when cased up, they are out by 3 markers with the 12 markers settling between 12 an 1 because of the crown tube position.
This leaves the only option of removal of dial feet and either gluing the dial to movement or fitting aftermarket stick on feet.
Resetting the dial was a small issue but the we had to keep the date window in correct position.
Unfortunately this meant we could not get true alignment of dial, chapter ring and bezel.
A fraction out but not enough to be obvious unless you are a OCD watch collector.

                  Conclusions.....

If you want a tuna look alike and are not worried about a few small niggles, and are not interested in modding it then then this cheaper option is a reasonable buy.
If quality is an issue then you would better off going for a branded version or a good 2nd hand club version.
In hindsight I would have been better off getting another TST tuna made up when it came to modding Tuna style.
There would have been no issues at all

But modding is possible with these as seen with a bit of effort and patience.
Spent a bit more than intended and not 100% perfect mod but still wearable and enjoying it.
A fun watch and challenge to mod.

Not the writings of an intellectual but I think you will get the Gist
