  • Omega Speedmaster Mark II Crystal replacement

I bought this Speedmaster which I have decided to restore. The original dial was missing its feet so the decision was made to replace it with the racing dial and hand set.

Fortunately Marcus at Watchco had the dial and hands in stock in Auckland. The glass crystal is badly scratched so I order a new crystal too. Some research shows a special tool is needed to install the new crystal. I find a drawing for the tool on Omegaforums.net

My father has a lathe so we turn up the tool from aluminium.

The crystal has an o-ring that sits in a groove around its edge. The tool is supposed to compress and guide the o-ring to allow it to seat in the case. I use this press to insert the crystal.

The first two attempts resulted in a small section of the O-ring popping out the top of the case. I have ordered 10 more o-rings and will try again as soon as they arrive.

Are you using some silicon to lubricate the o ring

I'm wondering if polishing the inside circumference of the tool would help

I ended up clamping the tool to the case which did the trick. Thanks for the help.
